The Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is at a critical stage in the United States and is
national health crisis. This blood borne viral infection can be life threatening with
an estimated four million persons infected.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes
of Health, 85% or an estimated 2.7 million persons are chronically infected with a very
small percentage of Americans aware of their infection because they are not clinically
ill and may not be for 10 to 20 years.
This “Silent Epidemic” can go undiagnosed for years and will serve as a source of
transmission to others.
HEP C ADVOCATE NETWORK, INC. (HEPCAN), is addressing these issues by advocating and
educating the public, professionals, states and federal government leaders.

HEPCAN, through this website, will be addressing the implementation of prevention and
educational activities into state and local public health programs, counseling and early
screenings for persons at risk for HCV, surveillance to monitor and evaluate the infection
rates within states.
HEPCAN advocates for outreach and community based programs on risk
factors and professional education of health care workers as well as the public.
HEPCAN wants to make Hepatitis C a national priority regarding public education of the
disease and the benefit of early diagnosis and treatment to achieve a reduction of liver
disease, infection rates, morality and morbidity. This will be the place where states can share ideas, and the public can have a voice.
